Oil Painting Basics | A fresh & simple approach

Have you always wanted to try oil painting but don’t know where to start?

I still remember walking into my first oil painting class. I was just 14 and everyone else was decades older than me. I felt so intimidated. I was a beginner and it was obvious. If not by my age, than by the wide eyed look on my face.

But I wanted to learn so badly. I had ideas for paintings that I wanted to create. I just needed someone to help guide me and get me going.

Thankfully my fear was short lived. After some good instruction and hands on application, I was off and running.

Maybe you are like I was, and really want to learn how to paint. Or maybe you need a peaceful, relaxing and rewarding new hobby to pursue. One that will nurture your creativity and deepen your mindfulness.

If you have always wanted to try oils but feel intimidated, I have created something just for you.

An online course that will help guide you through a simple first painting. Giving you the knowledge, tools & confidence you need to keep painting.

 FAQs

  • Absolutely! I created this class for beginners to oil painting. You will learn a lot and be able to complete the project. Your pear may not end up looking like mine, but that is ok! Just be patient with yourself and focus on learning instead of the end result.

  • Yes, I think you will! I have learned valuable skills from many artist throughout the years. Everyone approaches oil painting a little differently.

  • Yes! There are two full lessons in this course all about color mixing with principles that you can apply every time.

  • The short answer is Yes! The long answer is that you will find that oil paints really don’t have much of a smell. They are primarily made up of ground pigments and linseed oil which is obtained from the seed of the linseed-flax plant. I recommend steering clear of the paints with cadmium, cobalt and zinc in them which are heavy metal pigments that can be toxic. And I find that extra painting mediums that do have a strong smell like liquin are unnecessary. (I will give you a full list of safe supplies) I also recommend having a window open (or at least cracked open) because of the gamsol. But I will talk more about all of this and how to have a safe working environment in the class.

  • Well, this is a tricky question. Oil paints and acrylics behave very differently. While you will be able to learn some things like color mixing, composition and brushwork, I think this might be a frustrating class to take with acrylics. I am sure there is better classes out there to take for acrylic painting. This class is best for those who want to learn oil painting specifically. If you are an acrylic painter, I would encourage you to give oil painting a try! You may really love it.

Hi there! I fell in love with oil painting at a young age and have been painting ever since. I took my first class as a teen and continued to learn throughout college and from other established artists through the years.

Oil paints are a medium steeped in rich history and yet are so versatile and enjoyable to use. It was a hobby that I continued throughout my 20’s and 30’s and that I loved so much I decided to build a career out of it. I am now in my 40’s and have a successful fine art business based in Northern Michigan.

I have taught private painting lessons and a live painting workshop. I have participated in multiple juried shows throughout the years, have won a people's choice award and have been featured in local publications. I can’t wait to show you how enjoyable oil painting can be!
